Postpartum Doula Newborn/Parenting Educator Lactation Counselor (CLC)
I am a DONA (Doulas of North America) trained and certified postpartum doula (since 2006) and a Certified Lactation Counselor (since 2010). I came to this work as a second career after seeing a dear friend go through a severe postpartum depression following the birth of her first child. Quite simply, her experience convinced me that more support is essential for all parents of newborns. As a postpartum doula and Certified Lactation Counselor, I love helping parents grow into their new roles and build their confidence by providing them with practical and emotional support. In a recent article, The New York Times described me as “a modern Mary Poppins: a combination friend, teacher and spirit guide…” I teach a prenatal Breastfeeding & Newborn Care Class and I enjoy working with nursing parents; demonstrating infant massage and “baby wearing;” and supporting parents who are struggling with postpartum mood disorders, including postpartum depression and anxiety. I am also certified in infant and child CPR. I regularly pursue continuing education opportunities and am always deepening my knowledge about newborn care, lactation support and postpartum parents. I've been lucky to work with a diverse range of families, including single, adoptive, and LGBTQ+ parents. I'm a former documentary maker and my films about body image and family issues have been broadcast on PBS, HBO and beyond; my short radio pieces can be heard on This American Life; and an autobiographical essay of mine was included in the anthology Out of the Ordinary: Growing Up with Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Parents. I am the proud mother of a son born in July 2007 and I live with my family in Kensington/Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. (In my profile pic, you'll see me wearing my son. The picture is 10+ years old, but I love it! And I bring that same black stretchy wrap to my postpartum doula visits, so you might get to see me wearing YOUR baby in it some day!)

Hi....I'm MomTown. And I am here for you. I want to take care of you as you plan for your baby’s arrival, to educate you on what birth can be, be with you while you are having your baby, and be there for you when you bring your baby home (and for lots of time beyond). I'm also very invested in your mental well-being along the way. Because I know taking the time to have your needs met gives you strength to take care of your family. MomTown is for moms. MomTown is for dads. MomTown is for people who are curious about being parents. MomTown is for non-binary parents who don't go by mom or dad. MomTown is for gender fluid parents who go by both mom and/or dad (and every other name they choose to be called). MomTown is for people who identify as unicorns. MomTown is for people who believe the moon landing was a US government conspiracy (though I'll probably argue with you about that). Basically, MomTown is for everyone. I am a certified birth and postpartum doula, Certified Lactation Counselor and Childbirth Educator in training. I am also currently pursuing a Masters in Social Work, focusing on both perinatal mental health and family leave policy development. I volunteer for Postpartum Support International as a helpline operator.

Postpartum Doula Lactation Counselor (CLC) Childbirth Educator Newborn/Parenting Educator
I have been fascinated by the process of pregnancy, birth and lactation since I was a little girl. I got to fulfill my dream and start learning about those subjects during my first doula training in 2002. I became certified in 2007 after another training, and have worked with parents ever since, going full time as a "birth worker" in 2015, after the birth of my 2nd daughter. That is when the world of postpartum support was opened to me and I love it. Being with new parents as they get to know their babies is one of my greatest joys. I also love to teach prenatal education and help them prepare for what's ahead: birth, breast/chestfeeding and newborn care. I love my role in easing the way into this tremendous transformation of becoming a newborn family.

Birth Doula Postpartum Doula
As a birth and postpartum doula, I draw from my experience as a parent, teacher, and academic researcher: I work to guide you through the overwhelming amount of information available to parents, and empower you to figure out what feels right for you, without judgment. I’ve learned that it’s easier to build lasting strength and resilience when you are well informed about your options and have trust in your team.
