Better together mondays

by AfterThird C.

These are challenging times for everyone, but for parents trying to juggle homeschooling, cleaning, cooking, work commitments and the ordinary demands of life with children, each day can feel overwhelming. What I've found time and time again is that we humans do better when we feel a sense of connection with others as we navigate difficult times. I've been touched by how uplifting our weekly Better Together Monday gatherings have been. It's been wonderful to connect with parents from around the world, answering questions, offering homeschooling tips, and sharing ideas for combating feelings of loneliness and isolation. If you've been feeling a little wobbly or would simply like to feel that you're part of a network of parents around the world going through some of the same things you're dealing with, please join me each Monday at 11:00 am Pacific time--or watch the replay soon after each get together. These are free events and our gatherings are every week. Please note: I am a family therapist with many decades of experience working with parents and children. I am NOT an expert on Coronavirus and will not be sharing medical information. My intention is simply to create a safe space for parents to come together and find support.

Work, family and childcare: planning for the future

by AfterThird C.

There's lots of uncertainty ahead and planning for the future can now mean planning for something practical, deliverable and what works ... 'for now'! School schedules, summer plans, finding childcare and managing kids under foot has easily frazzled every parent. If planning ahead meant 6 months ahead, we may need to change the paradigm to mean '3 weeks from now'. ‍ Join us live for a panel discussion where Alyce Desrosiers, founder of The Institute for Families and Nannies (TIFFAN) and Lynn Perkins, founder of Urbansitter are joined by clinical psychologists Dr. Juli Fraga, PsyD and Dr. Noelle Cochran, PsyD to give a roadmap to planning for work, family and childcare needs in these uncertain times ... one step at a time. Specifically we will discuss: Establishing and adjusting a plan for your work, family and child care needs in uncertain times Conflict resolution and ways to support each other Understanding the impact of these decision on children and how to prepare them

Postnatal pilates: reset & restore with charlotte blake kaplan

by AfterThird C.

Living in this global crisis doesn't take away the fact that there are new mamas out there who are on or want to start the journey of healing your body. Whether you had a baby a few weeks ago or years ago, this class is for you. Charlotte will take you through Pilates-based exercises that address abdominal diastasis healing and pelvic floor healing + strengthening. You'll also receive a full-body workout with multiple modification options so that you receive exactly what you need. Expect to walk away feeling like you are connecting to your core in a way that has been lacking for you. You will learn tools you can apply into your everyday life that will help you live in less pain. And finally, work with someone who will empower you as a new mama so that you no longer have to feel confused about what you can and can't do. The focus of this class will be strengthening in a functional way that is safe yet effective so that you can feel confident that the movement you are choosing to do is indeed making a positive difference. This is a 45-minute class with a built-in 15-minute Q&A after the class. If you have specific questions about your Postnatal body, stay after class and ask Charlotte. This class is open to ALL levels. Modifications will be offered throughout the class so that you receive exactly what you need. No Pilates experience is required to participate. All you need for this class is a computer, tablet, or smartphone + your body + the floor. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing you can move in and putting a mat, blanket, or towel on the floor for your comfort. Your baby/kid/dog is welcome (but not required!). You will be muted during the class, so there is no need to worry about background noise. NOTE: This class will be held online via Zoom Video. Please be sure that you opt-in to our emails so that you receive the link to join this class. This class will be recorded and sent to all participants for future use. Trust yourself breath-work class

by AfterThird C.

The Session Grounding and Centering We open the session with a special guided meditation to get us focused and grounded. The purpose of breathwork is for you to connect to you. Teaching Next I will give a short dharma talk and ask you questions for you to reflect on, write in your journal about and set intentions for the breathwork session. I will teach you the 2-part pranayama breath. You will feel comfortable and you will fully understand how to do it. Breathing Once you fully understand the breath, you will lie down and breathe. The active breathing part of the session can last up to 35 minutes. That is including about a 7 minute "resting" or "acclimation" breath at the end (sort of like Savasana in yoga). Integrating Most people need a few minutes to "come back", just like after yoga, getting a massage or acupuncture treatment. There may or may not be a small share at the end of the session. But really, we keep it brief. You've just spent a good amount of time getting in your body. We want you to stay there and over analyzing what happened is a sure why to undo what we just did! That's it. We say a prayer and our goodbyes, and you take really good care of yourself the rest of the day!

Pmad support group with the motherhood center

by AfterThird C.

Transitioning to parenthood is difficult for every new mother, but for some it can bring along feelings of depression and/or anxiety. At least 20% of all new mothers suffer from postpartum depression and/or anxiety, and sometimes the best medicine for feeling better is being around other moms that are struggling just like you. Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays- Starting Thursday (03/10) we will be offering a virtual PMAD Support Group. Please check this page regularly as we update it with registration and more details. Time: 3:15 to 4:15 pm Cost: $25 per class Instructor: Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW is the Program Director of The Motherhood Center of Manhattan. After Paige’s first son Max was born, she suffered from severe postpartum depression that almost cost her her own life. Once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for education, screening and treatment for postpartum depression so that no more women would have to suffer silently. She drafted legislation in New York State that was championed by State Senator Liz Krueger, mandating education and strongly encouraging screening of all new and expecting mothers that was signed into law in 2014. Paige has been an outspoken advocate on the issue of postpartum depression, and uses her own story as a tool for change. She has appeared on the Today Show, NPR, PBS Newshour and in Women’s Health Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and several other print publications.

The parenting without power struggles monthly membership program

by AfterThird C.

It used to be that you'd be surrounded by a tribe or village of caring people who you could turn to for guidance or support. These days, most parents go it alone. And that’s not easy! We’re meant to have wise aunties to walk us through struggles over a toddler’s meltdowns or a tween’s sassy attitude. Without a safe place to sort through our parenting challenges, we may do nothing at all, hoping the situation will resolve itself. Unfortunately, what began as a small issue may become a full-blown problem; a bossy child may start losing friends; our kids may start pulling away because we’re constantly losing our temper.. I’ve created a way to personally offer you regular access to practical guidance and support: a safe haven where we can resolve problems together before small issues become full-blown problems. I’ve worked with thousands of parents for over four decades as a teacher and family therapist. I’ve written hundreds of parenting articles and two bestselling books. I’ve hosted parenting workshops from Africa to Kansas, Israel to Seattle. What I’ve found parents most need is an experienced and reliable guide to help address ever-changing challenges as our children grow up. To that end, I have created a monthly membership community that will help you have the peaceful, joyful family life you want. You’ll have support when you hit a rough patch, and inspiration to keep you on track when things are going well!

Parenting without power struggles (support for parents in coronavirus times) hosted by susan stiffelman

by AfterThird C.

Whenever we face something new and scary that might impact the health of our loved ones, it's natural to feel unsettled. What I've found over and over again is that humans do better when we don't feel alone. We will be offering ongoing support to parents through the challenging weeks ahead by coming together each week online. Our first virtual gathering took place on March 16th. It was wonderful to connect with parents from around the world and share suggestions for feeling more grounded, tips related to suddenly homeschooling, and ideas for combating feelings of loneliness and isolation. If you've been feeling a little wobbly as you digest the onslaught of information about coronavirus and practice "social distancing," you might like to join us in the weeks ahead. These are free events - my way of sharing a virtual hug! I'll be joined for some of these get togethers with special guests, including Janet Lansbury from Elevating Childcare this coming Monday, March 23rd. Please note: I am NOT an expert on Coronavirus and will not be sharing scientific or medical information. My intention is simply to create a safe space for parents to come together and find support.

Manhattan aardvarks live stream classes (tuesdays)

by AfterThird C.

For children aged 6 months to 5 years While nothing can completely replace the experience of live interaction, maintaining a sense of familiarity while keeping a song in your heart can be very helpful in getting through all the extra time at home. So I’m very excited to announce that every Tuesday at 10AM, I will be live-streaming my music classes! Each class will be 30 minutes and follow the familiar format, with all of your favorite segments – the shakers, the scarves, the sticks, the snuggle buddies, and of course, the TAXI SONG. All of my classes will be available after they are streamed, so your child will be able to watch the classes as many times as they please. That means that even if you miss the stream, it will still be available to you. Hope to see you soon! Ryan P.S. Introducing children to the world of music is a passion of mine – it’s also my livelihood. Thank you for supporting Manhattan Aardvarks.

Moms of color support group

by AfterThird C.

As moms, we all face some of the same challenges, especially in the beginning for new moms. Unfortunately though, women of color can have experiences in pregnancy and raising black/brown children that are very different than other women. This is a peer lead group for women of color, to come and do a few things. 1st to be in a safe space, 2nd to start to let go of the trauma surrounding their birthing experience, and 3rd, and most importantly, to build community.

Working and parenting at home through coronavirus

by AfterThird C.

AfterThird is hosting an enriching and informative conversation about how to make work and parenting 'work' in this era of lock-downs. About this Event: Many of our realities have changed pretty quickly this year! We know that succeeding professionally and as a parent is important to many of you (and to us!). To offer you support we are hosting an enriching and informative conversation about how to make it all work. Our founder, Karolina Belwal, will be joined by psychotherapist and parent coach Olivia Bergeron to talk about what they have learned about thriving as working parents and tips for working at home with children of different ages. This session will include: - Useful and creative approaches to working at home with a baby, toddler, and/or school-age child. - Setting realistic expectations. - How to continue to make self-care a priority. - Couple-care and maintaining your relationship through this challenging time. - Where would you like to thrive more as you continue to journey through the unpredictable weeks ahead? We will give you the opportunity to submit questions for our experts in advance and will open the end of our time together up for a live Q&A. The event is $5, so instead of that latte that you are no longer able to grab on the way to work, we invite you to spend an hour with us and let us give you some practical tools to get you through this unprecedented (temporary) new normal. A downloadable guide and recording of the session will also be sent to all participants. Joining details will be shared the day before and the day of the session.

Mama glow webinar birth equity: a spotlight on systemic disparities & black maternal health

by AfterThird C.

COVID-19 has exposed the fragility of our medical system. We know that maternal mortality and morbidity disproportionately affects black women and during this time, with rapidly changing policies and lack of support, we know that there are gaps that will leave black mothers exposed and can potentially exacerbate their health risk. In this informative webinar with Joia Crear-Perry, MD, Founder and President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, we will explore the health disparities that black women face, unpack the policy gaps and we will frame what birth equity really means. We will look at the structural obstacles and the work being done to challenge the system and make it safe for all of us. We want to move away from fear and step into self-determination. We want people to feel empowered to take action and advocate for themselves and take steps toward a more equitable future.

Mindfully managing your child's emotions and behavior during coronavirus

by AfterThird C.

Without the structure of school and a typical daily routine, many moms are finding that their children are acting out and experiencing behavioral challenges due to being in the house most of the day. With one or both parents working from home, it's particularly difficult for parents of infants, toddlers and elementary school aged children that are “home schooling” to keep all the balls in the air - especially for parents of children with special needs who respond best to a regular and concrete schedule. Sign up for this webinar to learn how to manage emotions and behavior for kids age 0 – 10 and navigate the ever changing landscape of structure and routines. Special attention will be on useful techniques and strategies parents can use to manage their children’s behavioral challenges and anxieties, and to improve attention and focus. There will also be examples of activities that you can do together as a family. Specific tips and skills will be provided for parents of children with special needs.

What you should know about parenting in extraordinary circumstances

by AfterThird C.

None of us has experienced a pandemic before. There’s no handbook for how to handle it. And if parenting was already challenging, (and let’s face it- parenting is challenging,) you might be facing even more challenges now as you now have more roles and less space. Children are not adults. They experience the world differently. Their systems process events differently. As the adults, it’s up to us to help them translate the world But sometimes we need a translator. Work life investment

by AfterThird C.

Fortnum & Mason (colloquially often shortened to just Fortnum's) is an upmarket department store in Piccadilly, London, with additional stores at St Pancras railway station and Heathrow Airport in London, as well as various stockists worldwide. Its headquarters are located at 181 Piccadilly, where it was established in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason. Today, it is privately owned by Wittington Investments Limited.[3] Founded as a grocery store, Fortnum's reputation was built on supplying quality food, and saw rapid growth throughout the Victorian era. Though Fortnum's developed into a department store, it continues to focus on stocking a variety of exotic, speciality and also 'basic' provisions.[4] The store has since opened several other departments, such as the Gentlemen's department on the third floor. It is also the location of a tea shop and several restaurants.

Say her name: black maternal mortality + honoring mothers lost

by AfterThird C.

This month we celebrate mothers and we want to acknowlege and honor the lives of mothers we have lost as a result of childbirth or childbirth related causes. Black women and Native women are 4 to 5 times more likely than white women to die during childbirth or due to childbirth related causes. What does this this mean for the families that are left behind when lives are lost? How does one heal after tragedy hits and how does one spring into action to seek justice? Join two fathers who have been directly impacted by this issue. Charles Johnson, the founder of 4Kira4Moms who became an advocate for birthing people when he tragically lost his wife Kira Johnson after a routine C-section in California. Charles will be joined by Bruce McIntyre, partner of Amber Isaac, a Bronx woman who tweeted about medical neglect and lost her life days later during childbirth. Both Kira and Amber's stories have sparked rage, sorry, fear and action. This webinar will be donation based and the proceeds go to both Bruce and Charles in support of families of mother’s who’s lives were lost.

by AfterThird C.

Join Trina Greene Brown, author of Parenting for Liberation and Latham Thomas, founder of Mama Glow. This guide fills a critical gap in currently available resources for parenting. Pairing personal stories from Trina Greene Brown’s successful podcast series with open-ended prompts designed to inspire reflection and creativity, this book provides insight for those seeking to dismantle harmful narratives about Black families, initiate difficult conversations on social issues with their children, and find community with other parents who share their struggle. During this Webinar you we will explore: What is liberated parenting and how does it differ from what society might suggest about parenting Black children? Why is community important when seeking to dismantle harmful narratives about Black families? What does liberated parenting look like? How does the new book Parenting for Liberation offer resources for folks parenting Black children, especially during these uncertain times?

In a society where the good is defined in terms of profit rather than in terms of human need, there must always be some group of people who, through systematized oppression, can be made to feel surplus, to occupy the place of the dehumanized inferior. -Audre Lorde It’s time for black women to self-activate! This event (open to Black women only) will help to guide us in knowing who we are in our bodies so that we are brave enough to pursue our deepest desires, and grow our inherent power. Working moms support group

by AfterThird C.

It’s always been challenging to be a working mom. Whoever said we can “have it all” clearly wasn’t trying to do it all at once. On top of juggling between working and being a good enough mother, there is the emotional and mental labor that goes into the planning and thinking ahead at all times to make sure the family train keeps chugging along, the natural stress and strain that our relationship with our partner can encounter, and the fear and guilt of doing everything wrong, or not enough, or hearing that horrible word over and over again in our minds – that word “should”. And then you throw Coronavirus on top of it. One or more parents attempting to work from home while entertaining, caring for and home-schooling babies, toddler and elementary aged children – it can feel like way too much to handle. You are not alone in feeling this way – this is super hard – and its uncharted territory. If you are looking to connect with other like-minded moms that are also making this up as they go along, as well as skills and techniques to help you navigate these murky waters – this support group is for you! Instructor: Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW is the Founding Director and Chief External Relations Officer at The Motherhood Center of New York. After her first child was born, Paige suffered from severe postpartum depression that nearly ended her life. Once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for education, screening and treatment for postpartum depression so that no more women would have to suffer silently. Paige has been an outspoken advocate on the issue of postpartum depression, and uses her own story as a tool for change. She has appeared on the Today Show, NPR, PBS Newshour and in Women’s Health Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and several other media outlets.

What to expect now that you're expecting: pregnancy after infertility and or loss virtual workshop

by AfterThird C.

Pregnancy after infertility and or loss; it can be one of the most exciting times, one of the scariest times, or a combination of both. And that’s ok! That’s why I created this workshop. Pregnancy after infertility and or loss (PAIL for short) comes with a unique set of emotional needs. In this workshop we’ll talk about what to expect after transitioning from fertility center to your maternity provider including: visits and tests, the difference between and OB and midwife, and other choices to consider. I’ll talk about feelings that can sometimes present themselves now that you’re expecting (or are hoping to be soon), and how some of those feelings might not be what you were hoping for. We will also discuss how other felt, and what they did to achieve the most enjoyable and informed pregnancy, and more importantly, guilt free. There will be time at the end for questions. Who would benefit from this workshop? Just about everyone! This workshop will not only benefit women who are pregnant with their biological children, but women who are pregnant with donor egg, sperm, or embryos; moms whose babies are developing in someone like a surrogate or biological mother. Same sex couples and partners. This workshop to help you to be a proactive patient rather than a reactive one. That means the best time to take this class is before you are pregnant! The cost of the workshop is $25 (if you and partner are going to join together, it is still only $25). Simply register via the form below and you will be sent an invoice, then a link to join.

Homeschooling without power struggles

by AfterThird C.

Are you anxious about your children's distance learning this fall? Do you need help figuring out how to juggle work while supervising your kids' schooling? Is it hard to be a loving parent while acting as "teacher?" Are your kids resistant to screen-based learning? Many parents find themselves heading into the coming school year as reluctant homeschoolers. While some are embracing the opportunity to educate their children at home, many feel overwhelmed and unprepared, particularly when work obligations make supervising kids' lessons feel impossible. While there are no simple solutions, there are ways to create a realistic plan that will reduce power struggles and make life easier in the coming months.

The technocratic, humanistic, and holistic paradigms of birth and health care

by AfterThird C.

This presentation describes the three major global paradigms of birth and health care--the technocratic, humanistic, and holistic models of medicine and health care. Central to each paradigm is its definition of the body. The globally dominant technocratic model defines the body as a machine in need of technological intervention and repair. The humanistic model, on the rise in many countries, defines the body as an organism in need of emotional and physiological support, and stresses the need for prevention of illness and complications and for treating birthing women with kindness and respect. The highly alternative holistic model defines the body as an energy field and stresses the need for creating full mind-body-spirit wellness. The profound differences in belief, practice, and worldview among practitioners of each of these three paradigms are explained, so that practitioners and women can understand the power of these paradigms to influence belief and practice and evaluate their own choices in terms of where they wish to stand on this spectrum.

Move with adrianna! for kids ages 4-6

by AfterThird C.

egend has it my parents met on the dance floor. From what I hear, my dad was the only guy who could keep up with my mom’s moves. Movement became a part of me then and has continued to be a part of who I am now. I owe it to my mother for immersing me in movement. From taking 2 year old me to her dance classes so I could observe and learn, to allowing me to train in modern and ballet with the most elite teachers in my hometown, to supporting me through a dance education; she did it all. Movement has offered me so much, which is why I want to offer that experience of movement to your child(ren) through: Move with Adrianna! for kids ages 4-6 every weekday at 3:30pm EST via Zoom. Like me, your child(ren) will not only have the chance to express themselves through movement, but they will also learn life lessons of commitment and determination. Not to mention, you Mom and/or Dad, will get 45 minutes to just sit and rest (as I am sure you and your kiddos are going bananas being cooped up inside). I love kids- their infectious energy- and I am excited to use my experience as a babysitter and a dance teacher to help you, Mom and/or Dad, in channeling that energy towards movement. Suggested cost is $11.50 per class with an unlimited monthly subscription available as well. If you are unable to pay at this time, please select Pay Later when registering; no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
